Summary

A new chapter of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is under way amid continuing major global disruptions that include soaring energy prices and inflation, talent shortages, supply chain disruption and the increasing impact of climate change.

This white paper presents the results of a survey conducted by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, with the aim of understanding the positions of lighthouse and non-lighthouse companies in this next chapter. The survey details the top three strategic priorities of respondents: productivity, sustainability and resilience. It was found that scaling Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies is a high-impact way to achieve these priorities. The survey reveals that lighthouses have a better understanding of what it takes to scale and are more realistic about timelines, whereas non-lighthouse companies often lack leadership commitment and investment and have a harder time moving from concept to execution.

To succeed, organizations need to build a clear, value-driven strategy, invest in people and set up the right governance. The Global Lighthouse Network provides an opportunity for manufacturers to learn from lighthouses and join the leaders paving the way for the next chapter of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
